Crowley Tests Engine Mods On Caribbean Fleet PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 11 September 2007 08:47
Crowley Maritime is testing engine modifications on ten tugs used for liner service in the Caribbean and four tugs assigned to barge work. The modifications are designed to reduce exhaust emissions, including visible smoke and particulate matter, as well as nitrogen oxides. In addition to emissions reductions, Crowley expects the modifications to improve tug performance and decrease fuel consumption. Crowley is working on the modifications in partnership with manufacturers including GE, Rolls Royce, Marine Systems and Interstate Diesel. Crowley has moved to using low-sulphur diesel fuel, and has installed ECOTIP fuel injectors, fiberglass fuel filters, custom piston rings, four-pass afterfilters and Rolls Royce propellers in some or all of the tugs, which has resulted in a 44-percent reduction in exhaust particulates, a 75% improvement in the opacity of the stack exhaust and a reduction in fuel consumption.
