(JACKSONVILLE, Fla.; Dec. 7, 2007) Crowley Maritime Corporation announced today that it will reimburse permanent/regular employees for the initial cost of acquiring Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) cards, which they will soon need to access secure areas of ports. The decision, which applies to Crowley merchant mariners and shore side personnel, is expected to expedite the TWIC application process by removing the financial burden on individual employees, and will help the company meet federal regulatory requirements before the end of 2008.
TWIC was established by Congress through the Maritime Transportation Security Act (MTSA) and is administered by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and U.S. Coast Guard. TWICs are tamper-resistant biometric credentials for workers who require unescorted access to secure areas of ports, vessels, outer continental shelf facilities and all credentialed merchant mariners. It is anticipated that more than 750,000 workers including longshoremen, truckers, port employees and others will be required to obtain a TWIC.
