Conservation Groups Want Salties Out Of The Great Lakes PDF Print E-mail

A group of 90 conservation organizations are calling for a ban on ocean-going vessels in the Great Lakes, citing a number of invasive species that have been introduced to the region via the salties' ballast water.  Research by the organizations show that for every $1 in economic benefit generated by the ocean-going vessels, their contaminated ballast water costs the Great Lakes region $100 in environmental damage. In addition to non-native fish and wildlife, such as the zebra mussel, the lamprey and the ruffe,  salties also deliver invasive plant species, viruses and bacteria that destroy native species and damage the Great Lakes ecosystem.

Indian Government: 25 And Out! PDF Print E-mail

The Indian Government is considering regulations that would bar ships more than 25 years old from docking at Indian coastal ports. The Indian Shipping Ministry estimates that more than 17,000 ships worldwide are over 25 years of age and are still in service.  The move is designed, in part, to discourage shipping companies from using flags of convenience to register their vessels.
