Mississippi slowly opens to barge traffic PDF Print E-mail

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers expects to open the Mississippi River to barge traffic as far south as Keokuk, Iowa, by this weekend, but that will not clear the logjam of barges stranded by floodwaters. Lock & Dam 16 at Muscatine, Iowa, should open today, with Locks & Dams 17, 18 and 19, which are at Keokuk, scheduled to reopen by Saturday.

Lake Charles Port Workers Begin Enrollment for Federal Port Security Credential PDF Print E-mail

Today, port workers, longshoremen, truckers and others at the Port of Lake Charles will begin to enroll in the Department of Homeland Security's Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) program. The program's goal is to ensure that any individual who has unescorted access to secure areas of port facilities and vessels has received a thorough background check and is not a security threat.

Nationwide, more than 1 million workers with unescorted access to secure areas will apply for TWIC during the rest of 2007 and 2008.
