ANCHORAGE, Alaska - With the help of the Motor Vessel Baltic Prosperity, Alaska Marine Pilots, the U.S. Coast Guard, and three tug boats, Unalaska's emergency towing system (ETS) gear has been successfully tested in Unalaska Bay. It is now fully operational and ready for deployment. |

University of Hawaii To Develop Ocean Forecasting Center |

The University of Hawaii has received funding to develop an ocean forecasting center, which should be operational within a few years. The Center will use undersea observatories, high frequency radios, buoys, gliders, underwater vehicles and optical sensors to create oceanographic predictions.

Congress To Evaluate USCG Administrative Court |

Some members of Congress are not too happy about the US Coast Guard's administrative court system and want an independent agency to take over, citing bias and mismanagement. Each year the Coast Guard court hears hundreds of cases against civilian mariners, which can result in the mariner's work license being revoked.

18th-Century Replica Puts In Appearance In Everett, WA |

The Lady Washington, an 18th-century replica ship will appear from 10:00 am to 5:00 PM on Tuesday, August 7 at the Maritime Heritage Event in Everett, WA. The ship's appearance is sponsored by the Grays Harbor Historical Seaport Society.

A homemade replica of the Turtle submarine, a prototype submarine used during the Revolutionary War, was seized in the New York Harbor because it violated the boundaries of a security zone established around the cruise ship Queen Mary 2, which was moored in Brooklyn, NY. The pilot of the vessel received two citations, one for sailing in unsafe conditions and the other for violating a security zone. The second offense carries a maximum fine of $50,000, five year in prison or both.
