Panama Canal Gets New Tugboat Simulator PDF Print E-mail

The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) announced that it has deployed a new tugboat simulator for training tug personnel. The ACP's goal is to expand the training to local and international towing operations. The 'Z-Peller'simulator emulates the new generation fleet of tugs acquired by the ACP to assist in vessel transit. Through a virtual database system that utilizes geographical designs of marine port areas, the simulator allows for the accurate re-creation of many diverse stages in the tug process.

PC Maritime Updates Engine Room Simulator CBT Course PDF Print E-mail

PC Maritime has updated its Engine Room CBT with three new modules that cover marine air conditioning systems; EcoStream oily water separation and basic hydraulics. The modules meet the STCW 95 standards and consist of four parts, including a description of working principles, operating instructions, a test of the module's contents, and an interactive simulator that tests a student's hands-on knowledge.

Q: Drug boats are usually armed, but how many carry 40-mm rapid-fire cannons and .50 caliber machine guns?

A: At least one - the HMS Saskatoon.

According to an article in the Toronto Globe and Mail, the Canadian Navy is investigating its drug-testing and discipline policies after it convicted three sailors and dismissed a fourth for cocaine trafficking aboard the HMS Saskatoon, an armed military patrol ship. The fourth sailor, a CPO and the ship's coxwain, is the highest ranking sailor facing charges in the incident. Robert Carlson will be court-martialled in October for drug trafficking and disgraceful behaviour. Allegedly, as many as one-third of the Saskatoon's 41-member crew were involved or knew of the illegal activity.

Hamas Creates New Coast Guard Agency for Gaza PDF Print E-mail

The Times of India is reporting that Hamas has created a new Coast Guard unit, which will initially consist of 150 members. The new unit is expected to begin operations shortly. Its major mission will be to prevent drug smuggling into Gaza, to protect fishermen and to maintain security for residents on Gaza's beaches.

Captain Bound Over On Drinking Charges In M/V Jork Accident PDF Print E-mail

According to RTE News, the captain of a vessel which crashed into a North Sea oil platform has appeared before a British magistrate to face a single count of being drunk while in charge of a sea vessel. The captain, whose blood alcohol level was three times the legal limit, did not enter a plea. Zbigniew Krakowski will remain in custody until a September 10 hearing  on the matter.  The other three crew members aboard the M/V Jork were rescued at sea and are staying in Norfolk. The Jork had been carrying 2,000 tons of wheat, which became waterlogged when the hull was damaged, and sank in deep water about 450 meters from the platform.
