Pirates Release Chemical Tanker Crew PDF Print E-mail

Somali pirates have released the crew of the Golden Nori unharmed. The 23 crew members were seized along with their ship six weeks ago while transporting a load of benzene. A man claiming to be one of the pirates said that a ransom was paid, but that claim could not be confirmed. Currently, the US Navy reports that no ships are being held by Somali pirates. Somalia has had no functional government since 1991.

Man Faces Federal Charges For Scuttling Boat In Lake Huron PDF Print E-mail

A Cheboygan, MI man <a href=''>was indicted by a federal grand jury for scuttling a 44-ft pleasure boat</a> that had previously been destroyed by fire. Wayne Duffiney  was charged with four counts of violating of the Clean Water Act, including destroying the Misty Morning in navigable waters; discharging pollutants into navigable waters; sinking the boat in navigable waters and failing to mark the vessel with navigation aids after it was sunk in a navigation channel in Lake Huron. Duffiney faces up to 13 years in prison, fines of more than $300,000; forfeiture of the vessel used to tow the Misty Morning and loss of his mariner's license.

Port of Altamira Pilots Receive Additional Training PDF Print E-mail

Port of Altamira pilots trained at the Newport Simulator Center at the beginning of October. The training included the use of a full mission bridge to simulate am LNG carrier and a 55-ton ASD tug.  The training also covered emergency training for pilots and tug masters on situations like power and steering losses.

MarAd and OSG Collaborate On Training PDF Print E-mail

American maritime academy cadets will have additional on-board training opportunities, thanks to an agreement between the Maritime Administration and Overseas Shipholding Group. US Merchant Marine Academy cadets and cadets from the maritime academies will be able to obtain on-board training on OSG vessels.  Cadets must put in about 300 days at sea to obtain a merchant marine officer license.
