Norway To Build Ship Tunnel PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 20 December 2007 10:28
Norway is making plans to build the first tunnel designed for ships. The tunnel will serve ships near Stad, which frequently must wait for calm weather to travel along the coast. The 5,600-ft tunnel is expected to cost about $310M (USD), take five years to build and will re-route ship traffic through a peninsula, rather than around the coast.

USCG Intercepts $61M in Cocaine Bust Along Pacific Coast PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 19 December 2007 09:00
The US Coast Guard cutter Steadfast, assigned to the Pacific Northwest,  intercepted a fishing vessel carrying 81 bales and 49 bricks of cocaine with a street value of about $61M. The vessel was seized on November 28, after having been spotted from the air by a helicopter patrol assigned to the cutter. The Steadfast crew interdicted the boat along the Oregon coast as the vessel's crew tried to throw its cargo overboard. Seven people were arrested and charged with a variety of possession and trafficking offenses.

In all, the Coast Guard has set a record for drug seizures in 2007, confiscating nearly $5 billion worth of illicit drugs. This year alone, seizures included 33,500 pounds of cocaine from a Panamanian vessel in March; $352M of cocaine from a self-propelled semi-submersible vessel; and 3,600 gallons of liquid cocaine dissolved in diesel fuel, which could be reconverted to 15,800 pounds of pure cocaine.

Indiana U Team Finds Captain Kidd's Ship PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 19 December 2007 08:44
An archaeology team from Indiana University believes it has located the wreckage of the Quedagh Merchant, the ship abandoned by the notorious pirate Captain William Kidd. The wreck lies in just 10 feet of water and has been virtually untouched by looters.  The Quedagh Merchant was believed to have been scavenged and burned shortly after being abandoned off the coast of Catalina Island.  The Dominican government has granted the university permission to study the wreckage and convert it to an underwater preserve that is open to snorkelers and divers.

How To Make $10M PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 17 December 2007 04:30
A tugboat captain has been awarded a cool $10M by the State of California for tipping off the State to the theft of sand from San Francisco and Suisan Bays. $10 million is a lot of cash, but then again, 2 million cubic yards is a lot of sand.  The Golden State alleges that the sand was stolen by a mining company over a period of ten years and sold to construction companies to be used in the manufacture of cement. The company was fined $42.2 million dollars but denies any wrongdoing.

In 2001, a tugboat captain under contract with the mining company filed a complaint with the state that alleged the mining company was taking sand from areas in which it had no dredging lease and was also underreporting its sales to the state.

The company's dredging barges are now outfitted with GPS locators to make sure they remain in the dredging areas specified by their lease, and the state is now completing a survey of the environmental impact of the missing sand on the bays in question.

The story leaves unanswered the big question: what will the tug captain do with $10M?
