Crowley Maritime recently received environmental excellence awards from the Chamber of Shipping of America for 26 ships owned or operated by Crowley subsidiaries. The awards recognized companies that had no recordable environmental incidents for at least two consecutive years.

Crowley Adds Capacity To Caribbean Service PDF Print E-mail

Crowley Maritime Corporation will add two new container ships to its Caribbean Island service beginning October 4. Each of the two ships, the Eclips and the Ocean, hold about 200 more TEUs of cargo than the ships they are replacing. In addition, the Eclips and the Ocean are faster, running at approximately 18.5 knots.

FarSounder awarded US Dept. of Commerce NIST Grant for $2M PDF Print E-mail

FarSounder, Inc., the world leader in 3D forward looking sonar technology, announced that it has been awarded a $2 million grant from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) for work to develop a long range/high speed navigation and obstacle avoidance sonar.

In order to improve the efficiency and safety of marine cargo transport, FarSounder plans to develop a forward looking navigation and collision avoidance sonar system, providing real-time 3-dimensional location (bearing, range, depth) of obstacles at distances up to 3.2km (2 miles) for vessels traveling at up to 65 km/hr (35 knots). This project opens up new possibilities in marine navigation by addressing the economic, safety and environmental problems associated with large vessel operations.

Group Sues Philadelphia Regional Port Authority Over Proposed Land Swap PDF Print E-mail

Several groups, including the International Longshormen's Association District Council of Philadelphia and Wilmington, the Philadelphia Marine Trade Association and the Maritime Stakeholders Group have won a hearing at the Commonwealth Court of Pennsylvania to determine whether the Philadelphia Regional Port Authority has overstepped its bounds by negotiating with food-service provider Sysco to swap terminal area land for inland parcels that have no maritime value.  The groups are working to redevelop the contentious parcel into a super-terminal for container ships. The container ship proposal, if successful, would bring 175,000 new jobs to the area, according to the group.  The hearing is scheduled for October 3, 2007.

Crowley Adds Three Super ATBs To Petroleum Fleet PDF Print E-mail

Crowley Maritime Corporation's Vessel Management Services has signed a contract with VT Halter Marine  and Dakota Creek Shipyards to build three double-hulled ATB 330,000-barrel tank vessels that can travel in excess of 15 knots. The new vessels will be delivered in intervals starting in 2011 and ending in 2013. The new vessels will bring Crowley's petroleum fleet to 17.
