Abandon Ship! B'more Ship Recycler Disappears PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 06 November 2007 03:30
A company contracted by the Federal government to dismantle two ships at the Sparrows Point shipyard in Maryland has disappeared, leaving a subcontractor unpaid to the tune of $750,000 and two unrecycled ships. North American Ship Recycling was contracted to break down two ships - the Sphinx and the Hoist. Instead, the ships are still in rotting in port and pose an environmental threat to the region. NASR has apparently sold the Hoist to a shadow corporation linked to NASR, in violation of its agreement with MarAd. The ships are part of the James River Fleet, which MarAd is under pressure to dispose of.

Global Warming Affecting Great Lakes PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 05 November 2007 19:09
According to US researchers, higher wind speeds and warmer waters are contributing to low lake levels in Lake Superior, Lake Huron and Lake Michigan. In the past 25 years, water temperatures in the lakes have risen twice as fast as air temperatures have and wind speeds have increased by 30 percent. Lake Superior, the coldest freshwater body in the world has risen 3 degrees since 1900.

Lakes Michigan and Huron are currently just an inch above the lowest water levels recorded in history, and the low water levels mean that shippers must reduce the amount of cargo on ships in the Lakes to accommodate the changes.
