German Company Says It Can ID Rogue Waves |

A German company specializing in radar technologies says it can identify so-called rogue waves that arise violently from an apparently calm sea. The new technology can be mounted onboard a ship or a stationary sea platform. Rogue waves have been talked about for hundreds of years, but because they develop and dissipate quickly, little documentation of the phenomenon exists. In 2001, two European Space Agency satellites photographed and measured two freak waves, as they measured sea-surface levels in the South Atlantic. Those waves did heavy damage to two cruise ships operating in the area.

Ship Emissions Estimated To Cause 60,000 Deaths in 2002 |

A study conducted by researchers at the University of Delaware and the Rochester Institute of Technology predicts that emissions from ocean-going ships were responsible for as many as 60,000 premature deaths in 2002. That number is estimated to grow to 84,000 by 2012.
The negative effects of high concentrations of particulate matter include asthma, heart attacks, increased hospitalizations and premature deaths. Most of the 60,000 deaths cardiopulmonary diseases and lung cancer cases. The most heavily impacted areas are found along the coastlines of Europe, East Asia and South Asia.
The researchers are calling on the IMO to require drastic reductions of nitrogen oxides, sulphur dioxide and other sulphur oxides from vessel emissions as soon as possible.

We need submissions from our west coast members on this ship vs bridge incident. We have all read the reported news and we members of tugboatlife know that one guy drives the ship and the rest bring coffee to him. These people are detaining the whole crew as if they had something to do with it. So please submit what you've heard. Was it a new guy? Loss of steering? Loss of bearing? Let the community know. |

The US House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly yesterday to override President Bush's veto of the Waterways Resources Development Act, which allocated funding for waterway improvements, port development, flood protection and wetlands restoration. The Senate will take up the matter soon, where the veto override is expected to pass. Each body needs a so-called 'super-majority'of 2/3 to pass the measure. The House's vote in favor of the override was 361-54. If passed by the Senate, this would be the first time Congress has overturned a Bush administration veto.
