TUGZ International is introducing a 2,000 hp -3,000 hp tugboat series designed by the Jensen Maritime Consultants of Seattle, WA. The new 74-ft tug is designed for harbor work, fire response, and construction operation, in addition to towing. The Handysize tug is powerful, environmentally sound, fuel-efficient and versatile.

Detroit Welcomes Home The Ste. Claire |

The Detroit Free Press reports today that the 97 year-old Ste. Claire excursion steamer that ferried passengers through the Detroit River to the now-closed Bob-Lo Island Amusement Park will return to Detroit for the summer as part of the city's International River Days celebration. The Ste. Claire will be docked to welcome visitors until November 9. The Detroit Free Press will have a Web cam aboard for the trip up the river, sending back photographs every five minutes until the Ste. Claire reaches its destination.

Last week, NOAA celebrated the keel laying for two new vessels being constructed at the VT Halter Shipyard in Moss Point, MS. The Ferdinand R. Hassler is a small waterplane twin hull coastal mapping vessel, designed to map the ocean floor. The Bell M. Shimada is a fisheries survey vessel.

Spain Claims Ownership Of Salvaged Wreck |

A US shipwreck recovery firm is under close scrutiny by the Spanish government. In May, Odyssey Marine Exploration, announced the discovery of what it termed to be 'the world's biggest maritime treasure in international waters.'The Spanish government claims the wreck is in Spain's territorial waters and the wreck belongs to the Spanish government. The Spanish authorities have ordered that two vessels belonging to Odyssey Marine Exploration be seized and searched if they attempt to leave their current position off the coast of Gibraltar and enter Spanish waters.

Retired Tug Moves To Florida |

West Palm Beach welcomed one more retiree this week. The tug Huntington was officially decommissioned in 1994 after 60 years of dedicated service at the Newport News Shipyard in Virginia. The 109-ft vessel was towed to Palm Beach, FL this week to begin a stint as a museum exhibit and classroom for the West Palm Beach Maritime Museum. The tug's new assigment is expected to begin next month, joining the Kennedy Bunker and the abandoned Coast Guard Station on Peanut Island.
