New Jet Propelled Lifeboat Design Unveiled PDF Print E-mail

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution has introduced a new lifeboat design that does not rely on propellers, but instead uses water jets to move the boat. The Fast Carriage Boat 2 is faster, easier to maneuver and can land directly on a beach at speed, which forces the craft out of breaking waves. The prototype, which has an anticipated build cost of about $2.5 million,  will undergo several design changes in the next few years.

Daewoo Moves Full Steam Ahead On New Container Orders PDF Print E-mail

Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering Co., yesterday raised its 2007 target for new orders by more than 50%, on a sharp increase in the number of orders for container ships.  Daewoo believes it can secure $17 billion in US orders, 55 percent higher than its original $11 billion goal.  Daewoo also plans to spend $87 million to upgrade a South Korean dock dedicated to the manufacture of container ships.  Daewoo currently has enough orders to keep itself busy through 2010.
 
Navy Charters Two Tankers Under Construction PDF Print E-mail

The United States Navy has announced that it has chartered two tankers under construction from the US Shipping Partners, Ltd. The initial charter for the fuel tankers is 12 months, with an option to extend the charter for three additional one-year periods. The tankers, expected to be delivered in 2010 and 2011, will replace part of the Navy's T5 tanker fleet, some of which will reach the end of their useful lives in 2010.



 
AHL Shipping To Use Modular Construction on New Jones Act Tankers PDF Print E-mail

Last week, AHL Shipping Company (AHL) announced plans to build three, shallow-draft, 49,000 deadweight ton (DWT) Jones Act- and OPA90 (Oil Pollution Act of 1990)-compliant tankers in connection with a charter agreement with Shell Trading (US) Company (Shell Trading).

The vessels will be the first Jones Act tankers to be constructed under the common structural rules adopted by the International Association of Classification Societies, which came into effect in April 2006. They also will be the first vessels of this size to be built in the U.S. using the modular construction concept. The vessels will go on long-term time charter to Shell Trading in 2009/2010.
