Seakeeper has released a new vessel stabilization system called Stability Control that controls pitch, yaw and roll on any vessel with a planing hull. Performance is limited to speeds of less than 20 knots. The system works by rapidly extending transverse blades at the intersection of the transom and the bottom of the boat. The blades operate in place of trim tabs and control running boat trim when active stabilization is not running. Peak power consumption for the system is 1.5 kW. Seakeeper is taking orders for the system now and will begin delivery after October 1. Professional installation is required. The system is priced at $21,500, not including installation.

From Times Wire Reports July 13, 2007 The
Spanish Civil Guard heightened a battle over a $500-million treasure of
gold and silver coins from a shipwreck when it seized a vessel
belonging to a Tampa, Fla.-based company.
The Ocean Alert was
seized three miles off the southeastern coast. The Civil Guard acted on
an order of a Spanish judge who in June instructed police to seize two
vessels of Odyssey Marine Exploration if they left the British colony
of Gibraltar and entered Spanish waters.
Odyssey said it had found the colonial-era shipwreck May 18, and the coins have been flown to the United States.

Jones Act proponents sue Coast Guard Long-simmering concerns about some recent Coast Guard Jones Act eligibility decisions have reached court.A suit was filed earlier this week in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia against the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. the U.S. Coast Guard and the National Vessel Documentation. The plaintiffs are the Shipbuilders Council of America, Crowley Maritime Corporation and Overseas Shipholding Group. The filing says the case is 'an action for review of the issuance of a certificate of documentation with a coastwise endorsement by the National Vessel Documentation Center ('NVDC'), a unit of the United States Coast Guard ('Coast Guard'), authorizing the Motor Tanker SEABULK TRADER ('MIT SEABULK TRADER) to engage in U.S. domestic trades even though it has had double sides added in a foreign shipyard to make it a doublehulled vessel. Since the beginning of this Nation, our domestic shipping trades (or 'coastwise'trades) have been reserved to vessels built in the United States in order to provide a supply of suitable vessels and trained mariners to promote the commercial interests of the country, and to serve as a military auxiliary in time of war or national emergency. Consistent with this rule, a vessel that has obtained coastwise trading privileges and is later rebuilt must be rebuilt entirely in the United States in order to retain coastwise trading privileges.' |
