NOAA, Smithsonian Release Ballast Water Treatment Report |

NOAA and the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center have released a joint report on the effectiveness of ballast water treatment on the reduction of invasive species in the Chesapeake Bay and in the Great Lakes. According to the report, the ballast water treatment regulations are at least 90 percent effective in removing non-native planktonic species, but the authors cannot say whether the remaining 10 percent pose an invasive risk to the local ecosystems.

Worlds Largest Oil Tanker Gets A New Coat; TBT Treaty In Effect |

International Paint, Ltd., <a href=''>announced yesterday the completion of coating work on the TI Africa</a>, one of the world's largest crude oil tankers. The ship, currently dry-docked in Dubai, was coated with Intersleek 900, a new anti-fouling coating that provides excellent release, and resists mechanical damage. The coating also improves efficiency by 6 percent over other anti-fouling coatings. Intersleek 900 does not contain biocides, making it environmentally more friendly than other marine coatings.
In related news, Panama ratified the international treaty on TBT and other organotin agents, initiating a 12-month compliance clock for countries that ratified the treaty. The treaty consists of an agreement to stop using organotins in anti-fouling paints, and prohibits ships from non-signatories from entering territorial waters of treaty signers unless the offending hull paints have been sealed.
