A Panamanian coal carrier ran aground off the east coast of Australia on Friday during a wild storm. The Pasha Bulker, which was built in 2006-07, was at rest on top of a reef off the coast of Newcastle in 56-ft waves. Helicopters evacuated 21 Filipino and Korean crew members from the 30,000-ton vessel, whose hull appeared to be intact, as reported by inspection crews who boarded the stricken vessel on Saturday. Australia's national transport ministry was monitoring several other ships that appeared to be in distress as they attempted to move away from the Newcastle coast. The storm produced 15-ft swells in Sydney Harbor and caused the cancellation of ferry services there. |
