MARQUETTE -- Crews have cleaned up an oil spill in the Lower Harbor in Marquette.

The area was closed after the U.S. Coast Guard was notified of the leak on Monday.

The tugboat was pushing a barge when a mechanical thruster broke off near the Shiras Generating Plant.

Coast Guard officials said environmental contractors have been able to collect more than 30 gallons of oil using a vacuum truck. They picked up more oiled debris from the shoreline.Divers have located the thruster. The area is surrounded by a containment boom, and boaters are asked to stay away.

A crane and salvage barge will try to recover the thruster by the weekend.

MUSCLE SHOAL

The captain of a barge-towing tugboat testified Tuesday that everything happened too suddenly to avoid a collision with a pleasure boat on Wilson Lake in March.

Capt. Joe M. Johnson said the 32-foot pleasure boat cut into the path of the front of the two barges he was towing March 27.
