USCG Begins Annual Buoy Recovery In Lake Michigan PDF Print E-mail

The US Coast Guard Lake Michigan Sector has begun the annual retrieval of navigation aids in Lake Michigan. 128 buoys and 32 fog signals will be removed from service to prevent them from being damaged by ice and poor weather in the lake during the winter months. Units based in Muskegon, MI, Green Bay and Kenosha, WI are participating in the recovery operation. The aids will be redeployed when the lake thaws in the spring - usually in April.

Global Warming Affecting Great Lakes PDF Print E-mail

According to US researchers, higher wind speeds and warmer waters are contributing to low lake levels in Lake Superior, Lake Huron and Lake Michigan. In the past 25 years, water temperatures in the lakes have risen twice as fast as air temperatures have and wind speeds have increased by 30 percent. Lake Superior, the coldest freshwater body in the world has risen 3 degrees since 1900.

Lakes Michigan and Huron are currently just an inch above the lowest water levels recorded in history, and the low water levels mean that shippers must reduce the amount of cargo on ships in the Lakes to accommodate the changes.
