James White will return as the head of the Maryland Port Authority. White was originally named to be the head of the MPA in 1999 and was forced to resign in 2005, for political reasons, which infuriated the Maryland Port community. He was replaced by F. Brooks Royster III, who has recently been criticized for not increasing the number of contracts held by the MPA.

Crowley Steps Up Hiring and Training For Tug Personnel PDF Print E-mail

Crowley announced last week that it had hired 21 Class of 2007 graduates from the nation's merchant marine academies to offset crew shortages. The new hires will receive additional training in the basics of towing, operating procedures and safety. Once they complete the training program, the graduates will then embark on a one-month sail to gain hands--on experience. The hiring push is one element of a strategy adopted last year by Crowley to recruit and retain qualified personnel. The company is encouraging cadet shipping on its tugs and expanding its participation in maritime academy programs that focus on the towing industry.
