Tug Accident Claims Life Of Crewman PDF Print E-mail

Lester Ralph Gaskins - known as Ralph to friends - was killed in an accident aboard the tugboat Choptank, operated by Vane Brothers, on Sunday, April 27, 2008 in Philadelphia. He was injured by a stern line aboard the tug while the boat was being passed by another vessel. He later died from massive chest injuries at an area hospital.
Mr. Gaskins was a 20-year veteran of the New Bern (NC) Fire Department, where he served in all capacities, including Department Chief. He had begun working for Vane Brothers as a second career. Mr. Gaskins leaves behind his wife Pam, two adult sons and an 18-year-old daughter. He is also survived by a 2-year-old grandson. He also leaves behind many devastated colleagues and friends in both the firefighting and maritime industries.
Funeral arrangements have been made by the Pollock-Best Funeral Home. Mr. Gaskins will be buried on Saturday, May 3, 2008 at 11:00 AM from the Tabernacle Baptist Church, at 616 Broad St New Bern, NC. As is customary for fire department veterans, Engine 33 will bear Mr. Gaskin's casket in a memorial procession past the New Bern fire station. Condolences, including donations, may be sent to the family via the Pollock-Best Funeral Home, 2015 Neuse Blvd, New Bern, NC 28562.

HALLOWELL -- Timothy Ladd had a big heart, cared deeply for others and 'was a great person to be around,'his friends and family said Tuesday.Ladd, 59, of Hallowell was killed Monday morning in a plane crash during a thunderstorm in the Berkshires. The pilot of the single engine plane, Boothbay Harbor businessman Gregg Hartley, 54, also died in the crash.The Piper PA-32 was registered to Hartley Marine Services, the dry bulk transport and tug company Hartley owned.Ladd, a mechanical subcontractor, and Hartley were flying from Wiscasset to Columbia County Airport in Hudson, N.Y., a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration said.
