The Port of Houston will begin issuing TWIC cards to port workers, longshoremen, truck drivers and others beginning next month. The cards, which identifies employees who have clearance to move around the port unescorted, will cost $132.50 and are valid for five years.

Global Crew Shortage Reaches Crisis Point PDF Print E-mail

Captain Pradeep Chawla, director of safety and qualifications rules for the Anglo-Eastern group recently delivered a presentation on the global shortage of qualified officers and crew members in the shipping industry.  According to Chawla, recruitment of a minimum of two cadets per vessel is required to sustain adequate human resources. The worldwide shortage is expected to continue at least through 2009. Chawla says that continuous recruiting and training is needed to avoid future shortages.
