The University of Technology and the Caribbean Maritime Institute have signed a joint agreement to provide post-graduate education for engineering students who are considering work at sea. The current worldwide shortage of qualified officers will grow, from 10,000 to 21,000 in the next four years and Jamaica's strategy will be to offer officer training at a higher level. Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago are the only regions of the Caribbean that offer maritime training. The partnership was signed to help offset the rising number of engineering graduates who cannot find work in their field. The agreement will provide a post-graduate diploma in Marine Engineering, to allow engineering graduates to apply for maritime jobs.
