The Savannah River was closed to commercial traffic this morning at 01:45 in response to the accidental grounding of the MSC Korea. The container ship lost power and grounded on the South Carolina side of the river near Elba Island. Four tugs moved the ship to a safer location in the navigation channel. The four tugs remained on the scene to help the ship maintain its position, as the crew attempted to restore power.
Once power is restored, the ship must return to port to complete a dive survey of the hull, and provide an explanation as to why it lost power.
