Spill on FL's St. Johns River Attributed to Tug Company PDF Print E-mail

A 500-gallon fuel oil spill over the weekend on the St. Johns River in Florida is being attributed to a local towing company. The US Coast Guard responded to the spill, which happened early Saturday morning, near the Lions Club Boat Ramp. The Coast Guard will not name the company responsible for the accident until its investigation is complete. Recovery and cleanup efforts have begun, but no damage estimates have been made. The spill has coated the shoreline in the area of the accident, and could also affect local wildlife.

Ship's Master Sentenced To One Year For Collision While Drunk PDF Print E-mail

A Polish sea captain whose vessel collided with an unmanned gas platform int he North Sea was sentenced to 12 months in jail. Zbigniew Krakowski was the skipper of the MV Jork when he ignored the advice of the Chief Officer immediately prior to the collision. Krakowski, who was drunk at the time, remained in charge of the vessel, which sank after ramming the platform. No one on board the Jork was injured in the collision, but that did not carry much weight with the British court that adjudicated the matter.
