Cosco Busan Pilot Charged With Misconduct |

The pilot involved in last month's containers ship collision with the San Francisco Bay Bridge was formally charged with misconduct last week. John Cota had his license suspended on November 30 as part of the ongoing investigation. Cota has 15 days to respond to the charges and request a hearing on the matter. The investigative report stated that the accident was a direct result of Cota's piloting, and alleged that Cota ordered 'full speed ahead'when he could not tell where he was. The report cited numerous errors including failure to use a tug, and sailing the ship at an excessive speed.
The Revolution assisted the Cosco Busan out of port, after which Cota requested that the tug attach a line to the ship's stern and follow the Cosco Busan. The report states that Cota made no further use of the tug, further stating that the tug could have provided positional information once the pilot lost usable radar images. Cota was reprimanded in 2006 for grounding a ship in the San Joaquin River.
