Sep 29, 2008 at 10:01 AM PDT By KCBY Web Staff COOS BAY, Ore. - A new, one of a kind barge that's been four years in the making here on the south coast is finally ready to stretch its legs. The planning of the barge, which is named Kamakani began in 2004 and two years later actual building on the vessel began. Operator Dale Sause of Sause Brothers said they worked with a group from Germany to engineer a design that would reduce the barges carbon foot print. Sause said by decreasing resistance the barge also decreases fuel usage. He said Kamakani is 60 percent more fuel efficient than other barges. The barge heads for Hawaii next month.
