Barge Hits Casco Bay Bridge PDF Print E-mail

PORTLAND HARBOR (NEWS CENTER) -- The barge, towed by a tugboat, hit the bridge's fender system.

It happened shortly before seven o'clock Wednesday morning. The Coast Guard says no one was hurt and there appears to be just minimal damage to both the bridge and the barge. The Maine Department of Environmental Protection was also on the scene to check for possible oil spills. That doesn't appear to be a problem, either.

The barge can carry up to sixty-six thousand barrels of oil, but on this trip it was empty. It had off loaded its cargo and was headed back to New York.

Marine investigators are putting the pieces together and hope to soon figure out exactly what went wrong.
