PALM COAST -- A tug hauling a barge ran aground in the Intracoastal in Palm Coast early today blocking the waterway before it was freed, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
No injuries were reported when the tug and barge ran aground, said Jeff Royer, Coast Guard search and rescue controller. Royer said it probably got into trouble because of the current or wind. Information was not available yet on what the barge was carrying or where it was headed, Royer said.
The barge ran aground near the toll bridge over the Intracoastal. Kim Taronji said she noticed at 1:30 a.m. today that the barge had run aground behind the Canopy Walk condo complex, where she lives. She said it was freed but then ran aground a second time, crashing into two or three slips behind the condo complex. It also hit a boat in one of the slips.
Taronji said the Intracoastal was blocked for several hours as officials worked with the tug crew to free the barge at around 10:30 a.m. Boat traffic backed up on the Intracoastal as officials worked to free the barge.
"They did an awesome job," she said. "It was very professional."
