- For 25 years, Oscar Mooney has delivered logs to northern Idaho sawmills using a tugboat on Lake Coeur d'Alene and the Spokane River.

But he makes his last run this week.
That's because the last of the five sawmills -- the DeArmond mill -- is closing in May.

The tugboat business arose with the timber industry in the region, providing an inexpensive way to move logs to mills.

But now that the tugboat company won't be leasing 180 acres in Cougar Bay, the Idaho Department of Lands is considering what to do with the ecologically sensitive area. Mike Denney with the department says some possibilities include recreational or commercial uses.

He says the department will also consider the benefits to fish and wildlife of leaving some of the pilings and log booms in place.

The use of the bay for log storage effectively kept motorized boats out of the area.
