The US Coast Guard cutter Steadfast, assigned to the Pacific Northwest, intercepted a fishing vessel carrying 81 bales and 49 bricks of cocaine with a street value of about $61M. The vessel was seized on November 28, after having been spotted from the air by a helicopter patrol assigned to the cutter. The Steadfast crew interdicted the boat along the Oregon coast as the vessel's crew tried to throw its cargo overboard. Seven people were arrested and charged with a variety of possession and trafficking offenses. In all, the Coast Guard has set a record for drug seizures in 2007, confiscating nearly $5 billion worth of illicit drugs. This year alone, seizures included 33,500 pounds of cocaine from a Panamanian vessel in March; $352M of cocaine from a self-propelled semi-submersible vessel; and 3,600 gallons of liquid cocaine dissolved in diesel fuel, which could be reconverted to 15,800 pounds of pure cocaine.
