Wednesday, 07 November 2007 12:46
A container ship collided with the Delta support for the Bay Bridge in San Francisco. The ship, which was being piloted by a veteran at the time, sustained a 70-ft x 13 ft x 3 ft gash in its side and was leaking oil into San Francisco Bay. The bridge was shrouded in fog at the time of the accident. CalTran engineers said the bridge itself was not damaged, but about 100 feet of a massive fender system around the support would have to be replaced. No injuries were reported from ship personnel.
