According to US researchers, higher wind speeds and warmer waters are contributing to low lake levels in Lake Superior, Lake Huron and Lake Michigan. In the past 25 years, water temperatures in the lakes have risen twice as fast as air temperatures have and wind speeds have increased by 30 percent. Lake Superior, the coldest freshwater body in the world has risen 3 degrees since 1900. Lakes Michigan and Huron are currently just an inch above the lowest water levels recorded in history, and the low water levels mean that shippers must reduce the amount of cargo on ships in the Lakes to accommodate the changes.
