Northrop Grumman announced its intention to compete for the contract to develop the USCG's Nationwide Automatic Identification System (NAIS), a two-way digital communication system. The system will transmit vessel location, identity, speed, location, course, destination and other information continuously. The NAIS project will allow the Coast Guard to identify vessels while they are still hundreds of miles offshore, and is expected to improve safety, navigation, security, search and rescue services and environmental protection capabilities.
