Dive Crew Refloats Sunken Tug PDF Print E-mail

A scuba diving crew refloated the tug Amsterdam, lost with all hands aboard in Lake Mira Mar in Florida on Tuesday. The crew were all model mariners. And for that matter, so was the Amsterdam. The model tug inexplicably took on water Tuesday and foundered before the captain, standing safely on shore, could bring it back for repairs. A volunteer dive crew was assembled and was able to locate and re-surface the ship, despite low visibility. The Amsterdam was found in two pieces, having lost its pilothouse in the accident. The owner, Bob Hawthorne, vows to see the Amsterdam back in the water soon.

THE VILLAGES — The Amsterdam was in a bad situation.

The waters were rough Tuesday, the occasional waves and spirals recklessly tossing about the ocean tugboat. Then, suddenly, the Amsterdam started foundering.
