Navy Sailor Killed In Collision With Tugboat PDF Print E-mail

A US Navy sailor was killed on Thursday night on the James River when the 24-ft special warfare craft he was on collided with a tug boat. Two other sailors were injured in the collision and were located immediately. The sailor who was killed was not located until 8:00 am on Friday morning, during a search conducted jointly by the Navy, the US Coast Guard and the Virginia Marine Resources police.

The boat was among five Navy vessels participating in a night-time training exercise. The craft the sailors were on can be used for the insertion and extraction of Navy SEALs. None of the three sailors involved in the accident were SEALs, but were combat support sailors.

A Little Creek-based sailor was killed in a training incident on the James River late Thursday when a 24-foot special warfare craft collided with a tug boat, the Navy said.
It happened about 11:30 p.m. near Jamestown Island. Three sailors were aboard the Naval Special Warfare boat. Two with minor injuries were found immediately, but the third sailor was not found until 8 a.m. Friday, after a search involving the Navy, Coast Guard and Virginia Marine Resources police.
