The United States Coast Guard is warning mariners to avoid hitting the endangered blue whales that will be swimming close to shore in the coming weeks. Three whales were killed last week of the California coast in collisions with marine vessels. Most whale species are protected or endangered. The Coast Guard is asking mariners to take special care in the Santa Barbara Channel, and the harbors of Los Angeles and Long Beach.  Mariners who strike whales are asked to report the accident to NOAA.

From PhysOrg:

Endangered blue whales, the largest creatures on Earth, have been occasionally sighted along the Orange County, Calif., coastline, The Orange County (Calif.) Register reported.

In the coming weeks, more will be present along the coast, the National Marine Fisheries Service said.

To avoid hitting them, boaters should keep a lookout for the creatures and operate at a safe speed in the Santa Barbara Channel and Los Angeles and Long Beach Harbors, the Coast Guard said.
