NOAA, Smithsonian Release Ballast Water Treatment Report PDF Print E-mail

NOAA and the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center have released a joint report on the effectiveness of ballast water treatment on the reduction of invasive species in the Chesapeake Bay and in the Great Lakes. According to the report, the ballast water treatment regulations are at least 90 percent effective in removing non-native planktonic species, but the authors cannot say whether the remaining 10 percent pose an invasive risk to the local ecosystems.
