Worlds Largest Oil Tanker Gets A New Coat; TBT Treaty In Effect PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 19 September 2007 10:51
International Paint, Ltd., announced yesterday the completion of coating work on the TI Africa, one of the world's largest crude oil tankers. The ship, currently dry-docked in Dubai, was coated with Intersleek 900, a new anti-fouling coating that provides excellent release, and resists mechanical damage. The coating also improves efficiency by 6 percent over other anti-fouling coatings. Intersleek 900 does not contain biocides, making it environmentally more friendly than other marine coatings.

In related news, Panama ratified the international treaty on TBT and other organotin agents, initiating a 12-month compliance clock for countries that ratified the treaty. The treaty consists of an agreement to stop using organotins in anti-fouling paints, and prohibits ships from non-signatories from entering territorial waters of treaty signers unless the offending hull paints have been sealed.

An international convention banning the use of harmful organotins in anti-fouling paints used on ships' hulls will enter into force on September 17, 2008, following accession to the treaty by Panama on September 17, 2007. The International Convention on the Control of Harmful Anti-Fouling Systems on Ships (AFS Convention) was adopted on October 5, 2001 by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the United Nations specialized agency with responsibility for safety and security of shipping and the prevention of marine pollution by ships.
