Local and federal authorities are investigating the sinking of two barges in the Hudson River near Stony Point early Tuesday morning. The barges, which were loaded with crushed stones, broke loose from a 13-barge caravan as they were being towed toward New York City. One barge, loaded with 12,000 tons of aggregate, floated south before filling with water and capsizing. The other barge, loaded with nearly 10,000 tons of stone sank just north of the Bear Mountain Bridge. The barges are owned by Buchanan Marine, which plans to refloat them.

Two barges dumped an estimated 21,000 tons of crushed stone into the Hudson River near Stony Point this morning, police said.

The two barges - part of a 13-barge caravan - broke loose from the tugboat about 4 a.m., local and federal authorities said.

The barges were being towed south toward New York City or possibly the Tilcon quarry on the river in Haverstraw, Rockland Sheriff's Department Lt. William Barbera said.
