30,000 people, including former US President Jimmy Carter, traveled to Panama City on Monday to witness the ground-breaking ceremony for the first-ever expansion of the nearly 100-year-old Panama Canal. The plan calls for the construction of a new lane and the construction of a new set of locks, doubling the capacity of the Panama Canal and permitting passage for longer, wider ships. The expansion is the result of an October 2006 referendum approved by Panamanian voters. The crowd, totaling an estimated 30,000, included world leaders in business and government. They joined employees of the Panamanian government and the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) in a ceremony and groundbreaking to celebrate the beginning of the first-ever expansion of the nearly 100-year-old waterway.
