Tug Crew Recounts Accident That Killed Shipmate PDF Print E-mail

The nine surviving crew members of the MV Douala Tide returned home to the Philippines, and recounted the harrowing ordeal that claimed one crew member's life. After issuing a distress call, the tug captain ordered his crew to abandon ship in stormy seas off the coast of Port Alfred, South Africa to await rescue. The tug sank in violent weather, after being swamped by 6-8 meter waves. The crew members were in the water for two hours before being rescued by a yacht and a helicopter from the South African Air Force marine rescue unit. During that time, the crew lost track of the deceased sailor. His body was found three hours after the rest of the crew had been rescued.

MANILA, Philippines -- It was a somber homecoming for nine Filipino seamen who survived the cold waters of South Africa last month after their tugboat sank, killing one of their compatriots.
The ordeal was still fresh in the minds of the seafarers when they arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport on Monday.
