Five Greenpeace activists boarded the Algomarine, a coal carrier on its way to the Nanticoke, ON power plant on Thursday. Two activists chained themselves to the discharge boom, used to load coal. A third suspended herself from the vessel's stern, dangling extremely close to the ship's rudder, which made it impossible to move the carrier. The remaining two protesters stayed in the water around the ship and painted slogans on the side of the vessel. The captain of the Algomarine, which is managed by the Seaway Marine Transport Co., for Algoma Central, radioed for assistance from the Coast Guard, and turned the ship away from the port. The three protesters who boarded the ship were removed, arrested by the Toronto Police Department and charged with multiple counts of mischief. The protesters were trying to raise awareness of the consequences of global warming.
