IMC Shipping pleaded guilty in US Federal court to accusations of illegally dumping oil and soy beans, and one count of violating the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, for damages that resulted from the grounding of the M/V Selendang Ayu and the subsequent discharge of 340,000 gallons of bunker fuel and several thousand tons of soy beans into the Bering Sea.  The accident also precipitated the loss of a US Coast Guard helicopter that was participating in the rescue of the Selendang Ayu crew. Six members of the Selendang Ayu's crew died in the helicopter crash.   IMC Shipping will pay a  $4 million fine, $1 million of which will be paid to the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife sanctuary.  The fine only addresses the company's criminal liability. The cost of the cleanup has been put at more than $100 million. The spill damaged more than 20 miles of coastline.
