OWLS HEAD (Aug 12): An Owls Head lobsterman was arrested Saturday for operating a watercraft under the influence of alcohol after he beached his damaged 42-foot fishing vessel Miss Madelyn in Owls Head Harbor.
Chris Young, 39, was arrested for OUI watercraft, according to a Maine Marine Patrol sergeant, who said no one was injured in the boating accident. The sergeant would not provide other information, he said, because the case is under investigation. At 3:20 p.m. Saturday, U.S. Coast Guard Station Rockland received a call from Young on Channel 16, the emergency radio frequency, reporting that he was headed to Rockland from the North Haven area, Petty Officer Ruben Colon said Sunday.Young did not inform the Coast Guard of what he hit, Colon said, noting his concern was that the vessel was taking on water.'He reported uncontrollable water,'Colon said, and that two people were on board. The number of people on board has not been confirmed, he said.In 11 minutes, the Coast Guard had a 47-foot motor life boat under way with Colon and three other crewmen on board, headed toward the breakwater.'[Young] told us on the radio he was going to don his survival suit,'Colon said. 'When we got there he was gone.'According to Colon, the Miss Madelyn headed full throttle into Owls Head Harbor and the boat was beached.'[The Miss Madelyn] was flying into the harbor,'Colon said. The Coast Guard could see that there were people around the beached vessel and that the marine patrol was on shore, he said.Colon's understanding is that Young left the scene and was later located by the marine patrol. After the Coast Guard verified there was no danger of sinking and that there were no fuel leaks, the case became one of salvage, he said.Colon said neither Coast Guard nor commercial assistance was requested in towing the vessel to Journey's End Marina in Rockland, where it was hauled out of the water. He believes another lobsterman provided the tow.Young was taken to Knox County Jail and booked on the OUI charge at 5:25 p.m. He was later released from jail on $500 unsecured bail, according to a corrections officer. Young is scheduled to make his first appearance in Sixth District Court on Sept. 17.
