CG Cutter Mackinaw Accompanies Chicago-to-Mackinac Yachts PDF Print E-mail

The Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw put in an appearance and welcomed visitors at Navy Pier in Chicago to kick off the annual Chicago-to-Mackinac yacht race. The Mack will accompany about 300 boats and 2,800 crew when they set off at noon on Saturday.  A second, smaller race will take place from Port Huron, MI to Mackinac Island. Depending upon the winds, the 333-mile race normally takes anywhere between 18 and 50 hours.

This is the 99th running of the world's largest freshwater yacht race, which began in 1898, but was interrupted for several years by World War II. The race winner will be honored at the finish line by the Mackinac Island Yacht Club but waits to take home the hardware from the Chicago Yacht Club until November.
