TWIC Hearing In Washington Set For Thursday, 7/12 |

The House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure will hold a hearing on Thursday, July 12 at 10:00 AM on the TWIC rule. The Final Rule was published in the Federal Register on January 25, 2007 but implementation has been hampered by a number of production problems. The Government Accounting Office reported last September that lack of coordination with the maritime community was responsible for implementation delays.

Lockheed Martin, the TWIC enrollment contractor, is concerned about educating maritime workers and maintaining an ambitious schedule for enrolling and conducting background checks on about three-quarters of a million industry workers. Additionally, issues regarding card readers have dogged the program. Thursday's hearing is an oversight hearing where some of these issues are expected to be discussed.
