New Jet Propelled Lifeboat Design Unveiled |

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution has introduced a new lifeboat design that does not rely on propellers, but instead uses water jets to move the boat. The Fast Carriage Boat 2 is faster, easier to maneuver and can land directly on a beach at speed, which forces the craft out of breaking waves. The prototype, which has an anticipated build cost of about $2.5 million, will undergo several design changes in the next few years.

The RNLI hopes to have at least one craft in operation by 2011 and as
many as four more by 2012. The RNLI is a charitable organization
dedicated to sea rescue.
