Crowley announced last week that it had hired 21 Class of 2007 graduates from the nation's merchant marine academies to offset crew shortages. The new hires will receive additional training in the basics of towing, operating procedures and safety. Once they complete the training program, the graduates will then embark on a one-month sail to gain hands--on experience. The hiring push is one element of a strategy adopted last year by Crowley to recruit and retain qualified personnel. The company is encouraging cadet shipping on its tugs and expanding its participation in maritime academy programs that focus on the towing industry.

Crowley is trying to bring a special focus on towing to the curriculum
of the maritime academies, which tend to focus on deep-sea vessels.
Crowley's cadet shipping program takes place on ocean-going tugs to
improve the cadets' experience with towing fundamentals. Crowley has
also increased its scholarship offerings to maritime students by 60
percent. The company is also looking to develop a trainee engineer and
chief mate program to help crew members advance to more skilled
positions.
