On July 1, the shipping lanes in Boston Harbor were changed to help avoid collisions with the endangered North Atlantic right whales in the harbor. The shift adds about 4 nautical miles to the route ships must take to enter and leave the harbor. It is the first time in United States history that a shipping channel has been changed to protect wildife.
