The Handysize series of tug boats will be built at the Great Lakes Shipyard in Cleveland, OH in its newly opened facility, which specializes in tug and barge construction. According to estimates by the Great Lakes Shipyard, 1,500 tugs in the United States that operate at less than 3,000 hp are more than 30 years old and will require replacement within the next few years. Currently, the first two Handysize tugs are under construction, with one scheduled for delivery in November, and the other for delivery in April 2008.

The new design uses an ABS ice-class hull standard for sturdiness and ice-breaking, and meets all USCG regulatory requirements. The Handysize tugs are designed for 2-man operation, and offers bridge control of the engine room and deck winches, while also providing high fuel-efficiency.
